What does “defund the police” mean?

When you first hear “defund the police,” it can sound like you want to drain all the resources from the police department. However, defunding the police means distributing some of the millions of dollars allocated to police each year into the communities they serve. By doing that, you increase access to mental health providers, counselors, and other community advocates, thus decreasing the need for a police presence in certain situations. Baldwin& reached out to me to create a window mural that would illustrate and educate what it means to defund the police.
